The origin of Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl goes back to the
beginning of the 19th century.
Around 1800 a scythe smithy of the Tyrolean Bader family was build was on the same place where the hotel stands now. Because of all the springs in ths area, of which the water was used untill 1982, the site was attractive for establishing a business.
When the tourists started coming to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the scythe smithy was turned into a guesthouse. The guests came to town in coaches. In 1890 the guesthouse expanded to a Hotel, the
Palast Hotel.
Even in those times, until the first world war, the hotel was mainly visited by the
national and international aristocracy .
The hotel was designed accordingly - spacious rooms on the south for the "lordship" and vis-à-vis rooms for the servants. Fortunately the hotel wasn't damaged during the war.
